Double Junction Mercury Sulfate Reference Electrode

The standard double junction mercury sulfate (Hg/Hg₂SO₄) reference electrode contains two filling solutions: both inner and outer compartments are filled with saturated K₂SO₄ solution.  Only the outer fill solution comes in contact with electrolyte via the ceramic frit at the bottom, allowing an extra layer of protection between your electrolyte and the inner fill solution.  This can help prevent trace Hg₂SO₄ in the inner fill solution from diffusing into the bulk electrolyte.  The outer fill solution may also be drained manually and refilled with a different aqueous solution of the user’s choice, if there is a need to avoid either K⁺ or SO₄^2- ions.
